Final Fantasy VII Remake - How to activate the minimap

Although it's not a big open world like Final Fantasy XV, Final Fantasy VII Remake has plenty of places to explore. This means that having a map can be very useful in knowing where to go. You can still use the full map to help you out, but it's definitely easier to use the minimap. However, it can be easy to accidentally turn off the minimap and not know how to turn it back on, so we've created this guide to explain how to turn the minimap on and off.

How to activate the minimap

You will always have access to a full map during gameplay, which you can access by simply pressing the touchpad to bring it up. While that might be nice, it's not always as useful as having the minimap on the screen with you.

Final Fantasy VII Remake actually has two forms of minimap you can use, one is the traditional type minimap which is in the upper right corner of the screen at all times if it is activated. The other is a waypoint type marker that is direction based only, as seen in games like Horizon Zero Dawn.

If you're like me, all of a sudden you'll look at the screen and realize there's no map on the screen. My first thought was maybe that part just didn't have one, but what eventually happened was that I pressed a button on the controller that I didn't know I had done and I had completely disabled the minimap.

If you end up with the mini-off, want to switch to directional style, or even have it on and want to turn it off, just press L2. Pressing L2 goes through a minimap rotation, directional map, and nothing. So keep tapping on it until you get the style you want and you'll be good to go.
