Minecraft: Caves & Cliffs – How to spawn Axolotl in your seed

Axolotl is the adorable new mob taking over Minecraft. Their intended home biome, Lush Caves, will only start spawning when Caves and cliffs part 2 releases in December – but you can still spawn Axolotl just about anywhere. If you want to find them, put them in buckets for easy transportation, and start raising them in your own axolotl aquarium, you can start doing it with a little trickery.

Axolotls are the very first amphibians in Minecraft. These friendly creatures spawn underwater, but they can also survive on land. They come in a variety of different colors, with blue being the rarest. You can breed them to get different rare colors, or just hang out and enjoy their strange pink company. They are also some of the toughest swimming creatures in the sea, and they will attack any hostile monsters. Not a bad little ocean protector as long as you keep them parked near your outpost!

How to spawn Axolotl

Axolotls are strange and colorful amphibians that are believed to breed in lush caves – a new inclusion in Minecraft that will be released in part 2, coming December 2022. If you don't want to wait that long or use creative mode, you can actually spawn Axolotl just about anywhere due to an oddity in the Cliffs & Caves update.

  • Spawn Axolotl, simply place cobblestone blocks under any water block. Cobblestone, Stone, Gravel, and Deepslate will all work. Axolotl will only appear in Level Level 0. Use Cobblestone to cover the water so no light can enter. The bottom/walls of the hole should also be covered with stone blocks.

If you are digging a hole and creating the conditions yourself, make sure the hole is large. Axolotls will spawn 5 blocks on top of a stone block (Cobblestone, Stone, Gravel, or Deepslate) at any height or depth. They go only spawn in water, and total darkness, so any large dark water lakes or underground waterways are likely to spawn Axolotl.

Any deep underground lake will spawn Axolotl, but if you dig a 10x10x10 hole, cover it with cobblestones, fill it with water and then block out the sun, you will spawn Axolotl. Expect to see tons of these little guys appearing under your builds in the future.
